Summer Foodie Case

15th August 2014

It’s time to dig out the picnic blanket as British summertime has officially arrived!

There’s no better way to make the most of the sunny season than heading out for an outdoor dining adventure, and thanks to Waitrose Cellar you’re picnic basket is certain to be full.

Waitrose Cellar has created an exclusive mixed case and delicious recipe booklet to help you get the most out of the sunny season.

Teaming up with Waitrose Cookery School Head Chef, Gordon McDermott, Waitrose Cellar’s Summer Foodie Case is a celebration of the fairest season of all – and is best enjoyed al fresco, with a side of sunshine.

Gordon has developed six seasonal recipes, that are perfect to enjoy throughout the warmer months and, together with Waitrose, he has experimented with different fine wines to find the perfect match to complement each dish.

The finished result is the most delicious combination of flavours – enhancing the very best of what the food and wine has to offer. Look out for the mouth-watering pairing of piri piri sardines with ripe and refreshing albariño; a great pairing to impress your guests at a summer barbecue.

Here are the six mouth-watering matches to try lout this Summer:

The Hedonist Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia
Nothing says summer more than a glass of Shiraz and some slightly charred meat. This is a delicious, silky and smooth wine with dark fruit flavours and an intense palate that goes beautifully with poultry and is excellent with barbecued chicken shawarma.

Palacio de Fefiñanes Albariño Rias Baixas, Spain
An enticing wine with flavours of ripe apple, white fruits and a refreshing minerality, Albariño is a classic match for seafood. With fresh flavours of apricot and orange blossom, this is a wonderful wine to accompany slightly spiced dishes such as piri piri sardines.

Domaine Paul Blanck Pinot Noir, Alsace, France
This Pinot Noir is refreshingly light-bodied with ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit notes and a delicate smokiness. Its easy, fresh style makes it especially thirst quenching when served slightly chilled. Pair this with sweet lamb with a crisp tomato crust.

Feiler-Artinger Blaufränkisch Burgenland, Austria
This oak-aged red from the Blaufränkisch grape variety has flavours of blackberries, red cherries and redcurrants. It has a delicate, savoury style and refreshing acidity. The ripe, fruity flavours complement bold food matches; try this wine with pork and chorizo tostadas.

O’Leary Walker Polish Hill River Riesling, Clare Valley, Australia
A brilliant Riesling showing notes of intense grapefruit and crisp citrus flavours coupled with a long minerally finish. The texture of this wine pairs well with meaty dishes and complements sweet as well as spice. Serve this with Malaysian spiced pork belly.

Waitrose Cederberg Chenin Blanc, South Africa
This wine is produced in partnership with Cederberg Wine Farm, with money from every bottle sold supporting community projects chosen by the farm workers and their families. This delicious Chenin Blanc is fresh and dry, with aromas and flavours of peach and lime; a perfect wine to match with spinach spanakopitas.
