This Morning & Kerry Katona

May 5th, 2009

Kerry Katona today held a press conference for her new TV show in which she referred to her appearance on This Morning last year. Here, Phillip responds to her comments.

Anyone who regularly watches This Morning will hopefully agree that we try our very best to give a balanced point of view.  We pride ourselves on being sensitive and caring to our guests.  In light of Kerry Katona’s recent press conference I would like to point out that the recollection I have of the interview we did with her, differs considerably from hers. I still believe we approached her difficulties with a much fairer, gentler hand than she would have received in many other arenas.  It is fantastic that she is attacking her problems head-on, it can’t be easy and is to be congratulated.  As always, I wish her nothing but health and happiness.

Read Kerry’s comments here.

what i dont understand is why dident kerry enlighten philip ad fern before the interview that she was on medication for bipola and that she may seem slurred in her speech etc,she must know what side effects you get from the medication and realise that fern and phillip would be concerned for her slurred speech etc,i do realise that bipola must be an awful illness to have to live with and the side effects from the medication cannot be very nice, but unless you enlighten people of this how is anybody going to know,so my advice would be before you do an interview make sure you inform people before hand,as i myself thought she was drunk ,and i think phillip and fern was genuinly concerned.

Phoenix says:

Kerry Katona has become a characature of normality. These celebrities who dont actually have any tangible talent other than possessing the ability to shame themselves in the public eye for financial gain really cant moan when things dont go right. Kerry knows right from wrong, Going on the show is all part of Kerry’s chosen profession and should be dealt with “professionally”. Which one of us would expect to tip up to an interview clearly high on something and expect the person conducting the interview to be sympathetic? Kerry, grow up darling…dont worry darling becoming a professional doesnt mean you cant have fun, it just means publicly humiliating yourself is ill-advised :)

DC says:

I watched Kerry K’s interview with philip and Fern and knew by her eyes and facial expressions that something was not quite right with her, then when she started to talk I was horrified, how could her husband have allowed her to go on the show in that state! She appeared totally drunk. I felt philip and fern were very sensitive and only asked what all the This Morning viewers must have been thinking and shouting at the TV. Hopefully one day she will watch that interview back and see it for what it was - a very embarrassing interview with a (recovering) drug addict!

Having just seen a more recent interview on GMTV she was equally as odd. Word of advice for Kerry to avoid any more negative press attention, make sure you are totally detoxed before appearing on tv again.

Michael says:

In my opinion, she didn’t exactly exonerate herself that well on GMTV the other week either…

carole t says:

I cant believe people think phillip and fern were rude to kk, in all their interviews they have always had the utmost respect for their guests. She really needs help and after watching her on gmtv it really showed.

sann says:

i hav bin watchin kerrys new prog feel sorry 4 the girl many poeple me thinks takin advantage of her.this mornin treated her very fair.she needs 2 get well out a the spotlight not in it but hay ho its makin her money x

Jez Sagaris says:

Appearing AGAIN????? but WHYYYYY!? What does this talentless useless person REALLY have to offer us,the general public?

l know MANY people with bi-polar disorder [being a nurse] and IF they acted like KK l would seriously think their medication wasnt workingor needed changing!

She’s clearly confusing the two conditions, alcoholism AND bi-polar, and, quite frankly MASKING up something here! PLEASE Phil, SPARE us yet another rambling “interview” with this goon!

brumlass says:

poor kerry whatever she’s doing must be affecting her memory cause my recollection of the interview is that it was handled sensitively and with care. Keep carrying on with your brilliant interviews Philip!!

Vix says:

well done Philip - you and Fern did a great job last year anyway and she is just showing what a mess she still is in. You two are great on TM.

Ness says:

Im surprised that the interview went for so long without the question being asked.
I fully back Philip and Fern and think the interview was handled with great professionalism under the circumstances that Philip and fern were faced with, you only have to look at the interviews that they carry out on a weekly basis.
xx

yvonne c keenan says:

I’ve just watched the kerry katona interview on This Morning again, and I would say without a doubt that philip was in no way at fault. His job is to ask the questions that the public would expect an interviewer to ask, if certain celebrities don’t want to talk about their lives in the public eye, and their difficulties, then they should refrain from appearing on tv when they are so obviously unfit to do so!! Philip was a gentleman, as always, and I think kerry should just get over herself and move on!!!!

Maria says:

Kerry is obviously not well and should be glad she is getting the help she needs and is improving. The interview was given sensitively and went as well as it could in the circumstances. Kerry did not have to continue with the interview - viewers would have understood as would have Phil and Fern. I fear Kerry is attracting a lot of publicity she won’t be proud of!

Phil says:

Kerry obviously has issues, but she’s merely stirring all this up again because she has a new TV programme to promote. She’s either exploiting the situation to he full advantage, or someone is exploiting her to their full advantage.

She’s not the first and alas she won’t be the last. “News” such as this, is merely advertising, under a different guise.

And it’s working - look we’re all talking about it. She’s achieved what she set out to do.

Susan says:

Having watched that infamous interview live I am stunned by how Kerry has reacted some months later. It was plainly evident to all watching that something was far from right with Ms Katona that day and Phil and Fern would not have been doing their jobs had they not highlighted their concerns and those of all watching.
I think Philip has responded in the professional manner that we would all expect from him, well done Phil!!
I do hope that Kerry gets all the help she plainly needs, and will maybe stop courting the limelight a little as it does not seem to be helping her mental health.

Dan says:

Kerry, stop looking for attention! You acted a complete idiot and embarrased yourself. Your a relic of the first wave of talentless z-listers destined to blight womans magasines and forever sell your life for another minute in the back pages.

Please get a life (and keep it to yourself!)

runa says:

Philip did a fantastic job in that interview with Kerry. He was kind and considerate. Kerry on the other hand should have known better than to go on TV when she has a “problem”, what was she thinking??? Now she has mildly come to her senses she is starting out by attacking Phillip How dare she! She should accept gracefully that she made a fool of herself and disappear.

kirstie john says:

kerry has alot of things going on in her head at the moment bless. The interview was handled very carefully ,you showed concern and compassion towards kerry as a friend you certainly were not rude or arrogant,in hindsight I think kerry will one day see that for herself.

TORVILL AND DEAN FAN says:

I THINK PHIL AND FERN ARE JUST LOVELY PRESRNTERS
KERRY WAS BEING UNFAIR SHE SHOULD LEAVE PHIL AND FERN ALONE

Christina says:

She obviously didn’t hesitate to take her ‘fee’ for appearing on the show and making an idiot of herself, then continues making money out of the situation by keep talking about it - if I was kerry I would be ashamed and would be keeping quiet - plenty of people unfortunalty have mental health problems but don’t make pots of money doing interviews about them!
We should all ignor her and she might go away

annette warner says:

i whatched that interview and i think everyone who whatched it did ask themself if kerry had been drinking , and if the tablets did make her act drunk and sound it then she should of said from the start, the company she is keeping should of told her she sounds as if she had been drinking. i dont belive phillip was rude to her i think she needs to take a long look at her self. i do feel sorry for her but she carnt blame every one els for her downfall .

Annette says:

I have just watched the video of Kerry talking about the interview, and it appears that she may have been drinking prior to this interview too, she is slurring slightly, although nothing like she was on ‘This Morning’
Phil & Fern, hold your head up!!! you treated her with respect, concern and compassion, what more could anyone ask for??

katie kitchen says:

Phil could not be rude or arrogant if he tried!!!

mandy ranson says:

I saw the interview, she looked like she was on another planet. Don’t know what she is up to but the way she has re-acted to this is just stupid, what would she do if she had been the one doing the interview and how she would have re-acted to someone doing what she was doing. Like I always say, if you can’t stand the heat keep out of the kitchen, maybe one day she will grow up and not feel like she needs pity.

joanne pilborough says:

Everyone who watches and has ever watched flipit and fern ( as my daughter used to call them )knows that they are very consiencious and always try their best to interview with a kind but probing and honest style. They have to ask the questions we are asking at home or they would be accused of being too soft!Maybe in time Kerry will realise this and appreciate its their job and they do the best they can on a live show.hope she understands this in time .
Dont take it personally flipit and fern. love your loyal fans

Dawn Chamberlin says:

I remember that interview well as I had had to record the program and ended up watching the interview 3 times as my friends had missed it and wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I think that both Phil and Fern handled the interview professionally and fairly. They had to ask her what was wrong as it was obvious there was something wrong. At no time was Kerry accused of being drunk. My opinion of Kerry has changed, she needs to look within herself for answers not blame innocent people

Linda Harris says:

I watched the interview and as always Philip and Fern were professional. They had their work cut out that day and acted appropriately!!! That woman courts publicity when it suits her and blames it for her failures when it doesn’t.. hey ho….

Emma says:

If Kerry was so concerned over the way she was dealt with, which i think you & fern were amazing, why only just bring it up…it was last year! Bit of a coincedence that her new show is being advertised as well at the minute!!!!
I used to actually like kerry but shes just made a show of herself over the past few years,is anybody actually interested in her new show - thers much better things on the tele than watching somebody grasping at the last wiff of fame! Concentrate on getting yourself better Kerry!

Emma says:

I watched the interview live on the day and thought Phil and Fern handled a very difficult situation very well. They only appeared to be concerned for her. Don’t know why she’s attacking them - she’s only got herself to blame.

Mich says:

All Kerry has to do, is what a play back of that morning. It is quite clear that both you and Fern handled a very uncomfortable situtation very respectfully. Its not your fault that she is as mad as a hatter… and yet very entertaining for all the wrong reasons!

Susan says:

I watched that interview. I thought both Phil and Fern reacted well to the difficulty they suddenly found themselves in. I did not think either of them were rude to Kerry, and I think Kerry’s direct verbal attack on Phil is unfair. It would be interesting to hear what she has to say if she ever does go back on TM as she says she is ‘dying to do’. Sad really.

Cheryl says:

I am sorry but this girl has had the opportunity to sober up, to come off drugs herself, yet she seems to have the cheek to blame all but herself. I watched that interview and I saw Kerry was the train wreck who didn’t sound like she had full facilties. She sounded drunk and high.

this Morning treated Kerry with the upmost respect and if Kerry cannot take the heat when she is in the wrong, she should come out of the public limelight and off our screens.

Gizzwizz says:

I saw the interview and you were both very fair as it was obvious from the outset that she was well out of it. Mind you I cannot understand why you had her on the show as she does nothing of any interest to anyone.

Angie says:

I think Kerry has major issues, it wasn’t so long ago she admitted she had a serious drink problem and that she HAD been drunk on TM, I watched the interview when it was live, she was quite clearly out of it, and I think the way Phil n Fern handled the situation was excellent, and from what I saw it was concern they showed…the girl needs help!

johnnathan says:

kerry katona possibly mixed alcohol with her prescription accidentally? phillip and fern could not have been nicer to her, this is a publicity stunt, so people will watch on mtv,

Sarah says:

That girl is a liability! Hats off to you Phil for behaving so magnanimously!

Nicola says:

Isn’t it strange how long its taken for Kerry to explain her “condition” in that interview. Even stranger how she’s got another show coming out soon. As they say, even bad publicity is good publicity…. for some.

S Goldsmith says:

She just a weirdo even if it was the medication there is no getting away from the fact that she is low life anyway and I still reckon she taking drugs and alcohol anyway. She just out for publicity. I would not have her back on This Morning as I dread to think what she will take before coming on for an interview with fern and phil she will make herself look even more ridiculous.

Kai says:

Since when did it become wrong for an interviewer to politely ask the interviewee if they are feeling alright when they are acting so bizarrely?
Imagine the uproar it would cause if Philip or Fern blindly ignored her behaviour so as to not “upset” her and she collapsed on air? There would be far stronger questions asked why they didnt make it obvious they noted something wrong and why they didnt give her an opportunity to cancel the rest of the interview!
Can you imagine the treatment she would have received during an interview with the likes of Jonathan Ross. She was treated with concern and professionalism and I think Philip shouldnt even bother with a single press statement justifying his actions as the whole world can judge the situation that was captured on air and the only person disputing it is an ill and desperate woman craving someone to blame and someone to notice her.

Delphina says:

Good luck to you and Fern - You handled the whole situation profesionally. Sometimes we are a little too generous in dealing with people that desire publicity against all advice - bad publicity is still publicity for Kerry - and she needs to take responsibility for actions and control of her illness - or is it simply her husband needs another car!

Lotty says:

I remember watching the interview thinking how hard it must had been for Phillip and Fern as you could see that Kerry was not in a good place and was acting out of character for whatever reason, it is a real shame that she does not appreciate how well she was interviewed at the time as others could have treated much more differently-

Nigel Michael says:

After watching This Morning for well over 15 years I can say without a single doubt in my head that the way Phil and Fern handled the interview with Kerry (Who is she what has she done except mine and insult people)Was with great consideration and respect and for her to come out and say that she wants to come back on the show surely if she comes on it will be the perfect opportunity for her to make a fool of Phil and Fern.

Debbie says:

I watched the interview with this young lady, and no where in it does Philip or Fern accuse her of being an alcoholic. People like this are to ready to blame others for their shortcomings.
Kerry get over it and stop living in the past, have some respect for yourself, and learn from Philip and Fern, they were only looking out for you, they and we were worried about your health.

Alan Law (nalawal) says:

I have just found the interview on you tube

I have just watched it and Philip only asks her if she is all right.

janet edwards says:

philip i think you and fern handled the situation with kerry very well as you always do

Tracey Wood says:

I still love you and have no doubt that u had her best interests at heart xxxxxxx

Alan Law (nalawal) says:

I remember this incident and I do believe that Kerry Katona is exagerating this for Publicity. She does not care of any damage that she could cause to Philip, Fern or This Morning.

She was treated far better than she would have been on any other show. Also I am sure lots of shows would not have allowed her on screen in the condition she was in.

You did nothing and I mean NOTHING wrong Philip and Kerry Katona should be ashamed of making these remarks.

Sue Self says:

Philip,
Unfortunately there are those in life who tread lightly and move on and others who storm down routes regardless to be seen and heard. You would not be doing your job or public following justice if you didn’t interview in a frank and honest way. Having watched your technique many a time I find you up front, very honest and frank but equally caring, sensitive and aware of the after effects that can be caused when ‘nails are hit on the head’ during such interviews. The truth that all is not as it seems is hard to hear and from that comes recoil and defense!
I’m sure that at some point Kerry will be able to face her demons but denial needs to be overcome first, and as you, I wish her well and a speedy recovery.

carole says:

Well done Phil, you have responded with diginity and compassion. Its a shame kerry needs to badmouth you as part of her publicity for her new show.
You and Fern were extremely restrained and caring during your interview with kerry last year - its a pity she is still so deluded and cannot recognise this fact.

Paula says:

I notice how Kerry has never come up with a Health Professional who can verify that her Bi-Polar medication causes slurred speech. I have looked up the brand of medication she says she takes and there is no mention of it being a side effect.

I suffer from depression and I understand how she could have taken things the wrong way and felt like she was being attacked but come on, Kerry! Most people are seeing through you!

Philip and Fern did the best they could in what was a horribly awkward situation and maybe now this non-personality will stop being invited onto chat shows!

Emma says:

Having first hand experirence of bi-polar and drink related illness, I can honestly say that slurring of words is an issue that makes life tough for a person to distinguish whether someone is drunk or simply ‘under medication’. My father suffers with both and in the early days we tended to accuse him of drinking when infact it was his medication that made his speech sound slightly slurred.
HOWEVER, as much as I once admired Kerry for raising awareness of this illness I feel that the car crash of an interview was dealt with by Phil and Fern’s ever professional flair and attitude. I applaude the fact that they did their job by asking all the questions people wanted to hear the answer to. As for the BBC interview I’ve just watched regarding the fact that Kerry ‘can’t wait to get back on the show’, personally I wouldn’t let her anywhere near.
Interview people that deserve the limelight and not just someone looking for revenge by publicity!!

June50a says:

I had nothing but admiration for yourself and Fern that morning, for the way you handled the situation with concern for Kerry’s wellbeing rather than exploiting it. I can think of some presenters who would have done.
It is a shame that because of the Bi-Polar and her low intelligence her paranoia would have made her think that the world was against her.
I think that the reality programme is a huge mistake as it will show more of the Kerry we saw that morning rather than the Mum we see on the Iceland ads. I hope I am wrong.
I like you wish her well and urge you to keep your head held high and continue to be the gentleman you are.

fnong says:

We are all right behind you on this one Phillip!
I watched the interview with total astonishment and felt very sorry for you and Fern to have been put in this position.

We all know she has Bi-polar and I am well aware it is a difficult illness to medicate - but so is booze! You as always were a total gentleman who was put in a very difficult position.

I feel you and Fern both handled the interview with your normal professionalism.

I hear she is desperate to get back on the show to be interviewed again - I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction - there are far more worthwhile people to talk to.

Livi says:

Does she not realise that at least half the UK saw that interview and none of them think the same as her? Both you and Fern were very considerate and delicate, as always.
I think it is safe to say that you have the support of the British public.

Karen says:

Maybe she thinks by doing this people will watch her show? Remind them of a supposed incident last year to drag herself back into the limelight to promote her show, tacky, very tacky.

Sue says:

She arrived late if I recall and neither Philip or Fern would have picked up on the state she was in. I watched it from behind a cushion it was so embarrassing and had friends texting me to see if I was watching it throughout!!
She showed herself up but Philip & Fern handled a difficult & delicate interview with sensitivity & professionalism,

eddie says:

I cannot believe that she would turn up to the studio in that condition. It was she who was rude to both Fern and yourself. She has made her own bed and should now lie on it and accept everything that is thrown at her. She will never throw off these drunken or druggy allegations, and does not deserve to. many regards to you both for the patience & understanding you showed

peter says:

i watched the interview and i agree with most of people who watched it you and fearn handled it brilliantly and no mallice was involved great work ….

jaynie h says:

At first I must admit that I did sympathise with Katona-as I myself suffer depression and a hard upbringing blahdy blahdy blah.
I dont go on about it all the time-get money from it-or blame other people. How many thousands also have had it hard.
I watched the programme(as I always do 4 days a week)and its nobody elses fault but her own-or her husbands.
Now I do not have a shred of sympathy for her cos she dissed the Schoff x

Maggie Stapper says:

Though now back in Germany, I do remember the team of This Morning always being fair and friendly. May be, if ever I am a star…..”dreaming” I will be a guest, too.
Keep up the good work!

rachael says:

I watched that interview live and kerry has no one to blame except maybe herself and her so called husband mark and her advisors/management etc. Phil and Fern handled the interview very well and showed geniune concern for kerry. I used to like Kerry but my opinions of her are dramatically changing. I think she needs to apologise or watch the interview alone with no input of thoughts from anyone then maybe she may be able to see why a lot of people especially phil and fern were generally concerned for her health and well-being.

wolves girl says:

the interview was handled with care and consideration, as always. she needs to get out of the spotlight for a while and face her demons and spend time with her gorgeous children.

louise says:

oh my god. i just watched the video on what she said about the interview and i am enraged. that girl is boyond a jolk. she is desperate for attention and i think its pathetic. by this stage her only claim to fame is public pitty, everyday its a different problem in a different magazine. her apperence on this morning was a disgrace and as far as im concernerd philip and phern conducted that interview brilliantly.

Rachel says:

You showed Kerry nothing but manners and concern, she was clearly paranoid and imeediately jumped on the defensive.

Emma says:

Both you and Fern handled the situation brilliantly Philip. In my opnion her comments about the interview are out of order. Having said that though, I admire Kerry and wish her all the best

JamesB says:

Don’t feel too sorry for her - Phil & Fern were doing their job in a very professional capacity. She knows the score, she knows the rules, and so do her back up team. It must be time for a bit of publicity me thinks - is there another book, show or divorce in the making?!

H says:

And from someone who suffers from Depression and undiagnosed Bipoloar (because I can’t afford private Healthcare like Miss Katona) please can people stop making excuses for her because of Bipolar.

There are millions of other Depression sufferers and they don’t act like she did….they deal with their illness quietly. Whatever the girl was on that day was more than anti depressant medications!!!

Kaye Slater says:

You were never rude to her Phillip, I thought both you and Fern handled the whole situation very well.

Trish says:

Is she not slurring her words in this interview….. she is an embarressment to herself and cannot blame anyone else for her silly actions.

aherne148 says:

I saw the interview live on TV I have to say that for a young vulnerable woman who has publicist, manager, husband to be allowed to go on in this state by them was despicable. Phillip and Fern handle it with sensitivity and dignity and were trying to perhaps guide her in way that didnt embarrass her. I believe she may have had medication but I feel it was mixed with alcohol. Her so called advisor’s should have stopped her going on she was obviously slurring before why let her go on if it was just medication then a quick ‘ohhh sorry Kerry has had some prescribed medication for her Bi Polar condition and isn’t in tip top condition’ would have been all it took. Sorry Kerry you live in the media this happens whether you like it or not and to blame others doesn’t help you to face up to your troubles

Lesley Pyke says:

Have just watched your interview on You Tube…utterly painful…I cannot believe it even carried on, I feel sorry for you both, trying to speak to her as though all was fine, almost covering up for her. If “medication” is doing that to her she needs to be at home and I worry about the children even.

Mike says:

Personally I thought Fern & Phillip handled the whole situation very professionally, I’m surprised that Kerry Katona is still working in television, she blamed her condition on medication for her bipolar disorder. Can’t imagine who allowed her to appear, she needs to learn that she can only cry wolf so many times.

H says:

You’ve done nothing wrong hon….

I’m a girl who was bought up in the same area as Miss Katona and also had a dysfunctional childhood. I didn’t get half the breaks that she has. Me and my husband lost a baby in 2003…..I had to deal with a Grandomther dying of cancer and also work problems all in the space of a year and this pushed me over the edge.

People like Miss Katona are happy to sell her soul at the offer of a magazine deal. Such is her want and need for attention she will take it from anywhere. You were right to show your concerns. The girl should really take a good look at herself and think about the effect this is having on her kids.

Like you said she changed a lot from the girl that went into the limelight a good few years back where she was likable….it’s a case of too many yes people and hangers on and her knowing that she had them to fall back on.

You’re a really lovely guy and the way that Miss Katona presents herself any sane person would see that she has nothing to even make statements about.

xxxx

Stuart says:

Once more holding the gentlemens banner up high, you have our thanks. You and Fern conducted the interview with nothing but compassion. We were all concerned about Kerrys state of health and you did your best to get the facts for us in a fair manner.

I dont believe Miss Katona actually believes what she has said, it sounds more like a publicity stunt concocted by a heartless PR team. It is just a shame she has to resort to insulting two well respected and loved members of society.

Here is hoping she can put her daemons to rest and return to her old bubbly self

Sharon Wheeler says:

Phillip I feel you did no wrong and was a perfect gentlemen as always I just feel sorry for Kerry she has many problems at the moment and I think she is under a lot of pressure to get back into the TV limelight it is quite sad really !!

kathryn says:

If Kerry wants to blame someone she needs to look at herself and her husband. Why Mark did not do something to protect his wife I just cannot understand. As for Kerry she needs to take responsibility for her actions and not try and blame everyone else.
Kerry is famous for what exactly?
Well done Philip for dealing with this woman in such a dignified manner. You are a gent.

Hilary says:

I would like to ask you phillip why did you not take a stand to stop the interview - unless the producers thought that watching that was good entertainment. I found that interview utterly sickening. I do not like that girl Kerry but I would not have wished that on my worst enemy. You guy’s have so much influence use it with respect.

Noel says:

As a legal professional who works with those of a diminished/affected mental capacity I am not surprised by the comments she has made.

Although they are quite unkind and confrontational, she is making these comments while apparently subject to a mental health condition, therefore she cannot be held entirely responsible for what she is saying.

The mere fact that after being diagnosed with a condition and embarrassing herself on your programme she continues to be mercilessly exploited by the press.

This itself I find deplorable as all that is happening is money is being made from the misery of anothers human condition.

I thought we stopped poking fun at the weirdos years ago when the elephant man stopped being funny…..The press who exploit her so readily should be reminded of the human rights act.

The most perfect and humble reaction one could hope for Phil, very delicately handled.

Tori says:

I feel sorry for her, only in the sense that she is in complete denial of her entire life. Her only defense to any of her actions is to blame others, because she can’t face the seriousness of her own terrible situation. I genuinely hope she wakes up and gets the help she quite desperately needs and stops attacking innocent people. The girl lives for the media in a fanatic/psychotic way but is the first to attack them when they tell the truth. Terrible.

J123 says:

Hi Philip,

just to say that Kerry’s reached an all time low I’m afraid.

We’d all agree that this situation has come to pass merely to garner a headline for her new TV show and unfortunately she’s using you as the soap box - as someone who witnessed the events at the time and via the news coverage afterward it was obvious that you and all around showed tact and I believe genuine concern.

With this form of response it clearly indicates the morals and mindset of her entourage; firstly that they showed so much respect for Kerry that they allowed her to go on national TV in that condition (whatever ‘that’ was) and secondly they then try to convince her in someway it was the fault of This Morning.

I don’t believe you need to hear comfort in our agreement that you handled the situation admirably it’s obvious to all how the matter was handled so I’m surprised at how deluded Kerry must be - this isn’t hear say, the proof is there for us all to see… herself included.

So how do you respond to such an attack? Well I admire that you’ve obviously bitten your lip as this must be a slap in the face given the situation you were put in, but then again any response placid or otherwise is publicity for Kerry so her team are doing what she wants and doing it well from their point of view.

Perhaps the response is to do nothing, and by that I mean the team at This Morning stand firm and say NO MORE… No more to Kerry!

Remove her from future shows!

At somepoint she and her entourage will want the publicity of This Morning and she’ll learn the hard way that you can’t slap with one hand and hold out the other for cash.

Sure the show will become slightly less chavvy in her abscence, but we can all go forward knowing that it’s in her best interest and it’ll be a lesson for others.

don’t take this all to heart, she’s been given a scrap of paper to read from by the same people who shoved her in front of the camera to embarass herself and rather than accept things for what they are she’s diverting from the truth and pointing fingers, which to be fair is the cry of every celebrity whose image dries up and suddenly everything that was an invasion of privacy is now open season for the highest bidder…

cliff cook says:

Hi Phillip

I have complete sympothy with Kerrys problems, but I to know of people with Bi-polar and I have never heard them slurr ther words.

Both you and Fern handled the interview well given the situation. The problem here lies with whoever let Kerry appear under the influance of what ever she was under and not with you or the good morning team.

Once it was noticed that Kerry was not well enough to do the interview her management should have stepped in and called it off, ok this would have left you with some time to fill but i am sure you and the team could have done this by extending other interviews and features.

I wish Kerry well and hope she can over come the problems that she is suffering from.

Regards

Cliff C

Andrea Chadderton-Mulrooney says:

I have watched Phillip interview many people during the course of This Morning, and he has dealt with many situations with care, concern and kindness. In my opinion he has never been judgemental or caused anyone to think “I cant believe he has just said that,” and I cant believe he would treat Kerry Katona any different. Although I wish Kerry well and I know that bipolar is a serious condition and makes people see things in a different light, Kerry should have taken a step back and looked again at the interview and the context of the questions before using the show as a springboard to gain recognition for the condition by accusing its host of insensitivity.
If people had had a problem with Phillips interview techniques, he would have been hauled over the coals over them long ago.

I think perhaps Kerry was on a different wave that day! Surely she should look at You Tube before speaking out about Fern and Phillip. Again!

Sandra says:

I totally agree with what Andrea says. She wants the limelight and doesnt have a career, so she needs to get what she can and i guess this gives her what she needs even if Philip and Fern have always been nice to her! She needs to keep her friends, she’l find she will need Philip’s help before he ever needs hers!!

Rhonda says:

Why do these people who go on these ridiculous reality shows suddenly think they are stars ???They only show themselves to be anything but and should hide afterwards and hope people forget them. Phil is never nast always very nice ..as is Fern..

lisa reardon says:

i found the interview disturbing u and fern were brill showing great concern 4 kerry but why would mark the husband let kerry do the interwiew when she was clearly not herself my view is he wanted 2 embarras her.

Josie says:

I agree with you Phil.I watched interview and you
showed great and genuine concern for Kerry.I too wish her well

Shelleyann says:

I agree with you Phil. I have watched it many a time on youtube and both you a Fern handled it fairly and profesionally. Not in any way that she has made out at all.

Jenny says:

I haven’t watched the clip again, because I found it a little uncomfortable when I saw it on TM the first time. I’m dismayed that she can come out with scathing remarks about Phillip because all I remember is both his & Fern’s concern for her. I have a couple of friends who suffer Bi-Polar, and I have never heard them slur their words. I know it’s not easy to do being a live programme, but I do feel that maybe she should have been guided off air. She is obviously still unwell for her to attack like this, but it is only her that can address her demons with professional help, but she is not going to achieve this by putting herself in the limelight where people are going to find themselves concerned over her actions. I wish her all the best but please Kerry stop the vendetta of Phillip, he did nothing wrong and was only trying to help.

claire barfield says:

I saw the interview with Kerry and thought you and Fern came across as being genuinely concerned for her welfare, my first thought as a viewer was “oh my god she is drunk” but it became apparent it was more serious than this. Surely her husband would have noticed she was slurring and advised her not to go on air. I fel sorry for her, and I hope she sorts her issues out, there was no need to be so defensive towards this morning as you merely voiced concerns that everyone watching had !
She looked terrified everytime she looked across at her husband like she was scared of what she should say and it was really sad to watch such a bubbly young woman struggling in the interview situation but it was live TV and I think you made the best of a difficult situation .

well said Phillip…your a true gentleman…

Suzanne Dolan says:

I saw that interview that was conducted and Kerry was incoherent, slurring her words and rambling. It would have been inconceivable to ignore the state she was in and her ” people ” should not have let her on television if they didn’t want her demeanour questioned.
Why anyone wants to know about her I have no idea. She is a disgrace. She should think of her own actions before condemning others.

Helen says:

I agree with you, Phillip. I saw your interview with Kerry Katona last year and both you and Fern asked questions that we, as viewers, were wanting to ask her ourselves. I think you treated her, as you treat all your guests, with honour and respect.

DeloreanGray says:

I felt you and the team dealt with everything in a very sympathetic and caring manner. If people claim your treatment was harsh, maybe they should see what would happen had Humphreys or Paxman been conducting the interview.

Andrea says:

People would have been more sympathetic if she didn’t run her life like a 3 ring circus. I saw the interview and the impression I got from her was that she was immediately on the defensive. As far as I’m concerned, if she’s happy to be in the spotlight, she must take the rough with the smooth. If she doesn’t want people to say bad things about her she needs more self respect and a little less of the limelight.

Clare0508 says:

What a shame she is still living on last years press! You embarressed yourself and will remain to do so unless you drop it….get over yourself love!

You could learn some decency and humility of Philip Schofield.
